Your first relationship test
Potty Training
Potty training has come a long ways, most people question if rubbing their dog's nose in the accident really does anything.
Spoiler Alert... It does not help.
Potty training is mostly consistency and ownership. If there is an accident, you should learn to go out more frequently or hang potty bells so they can communicate with you.
A relationship means to me the relation you have to the ship. What that means is, how you two work together to overcome potty training. And what that means to you is, have routines, notice body language, live in do land, enjoy the journey, and create your dream relationship daily.
Below are a few of my recommendations to start dog training. If you want the complete list, press I'm In!!
Potty pads
I support them and find them useful for young puppies to prevent Parvo. Also, for apartments and especially the ones on top floors.
- Upside: Easy Clean up
- Upside: Portable and convenient
- Downside: Fun to rip up, smelly, and can be confusing how to start.
To start, you're doing great if you are reading this. It means you have taken ownership and it must change now.
- To start a puppy with pads I give them way more than they need, imagine a circle with a diameter of like 5 feet.
- Next, know their bladder can only hold so much liquid based on how old they are. 1 month equals 30-45 minutes. Say your puppy is 4 months old they can hold it for 2-3 hours maximum. Take them to potty often.
- If you catch them going potty somewhere else, quickly pick them up and bring them to their potty spot.
Outside Potty
After a certain point I find it best to transition to outside, if it's safe I personally start outside.
- Upside: All smells are outside
- Upside: Natural and stimulating for your dog
- Downside: Sometimes step in poop, kills grass, and can be confusing how to potty in one spot

- To start a puppy going outside I will always use a leash when going potty to limit where they can go.
- Next, remember they can hold it for 30-45 min for every month old. Also, I like to use potty bells or a button they can use to let me know they have to go. To start just hang the bells and before you go out, ring them. There's more training but some dogs can catch on after this first step
- Finally, if you catch them going inside, bring them outside to their potty spot. No punishment necessary, just keep track of the time and take them out earlier next time.
