Puppy Training 101

Puppy Success

To be the absolute best puppy parent you'll need a few key ideas present daily. Routine, Naps, Potty Timing, Training, and Playing. That's it, master these ideas and you will be the best puppy parent.

  • First time getting a puppy...
  • It's been over 10 years since having a puppy...
  • You've had many puppies but this one is different...

Below are a few of my recommendations to start dog training. If you want the complete list, press I'm In!!

Routines are a must

  • Sleeping: Puppies are growing very fast and that means they need lots of sleep. The more naps, in their crate, allow you to get your work done and also practice separation anxiety. You don't want your puppy to go down that road.
  • Pottying: Potty training is your first relationship test and it will set the foundation for what is hidden from you and what can be achieved through healthy communication.
  • Training: Training your puppy is like learning a language. Because we are human we can learn languages and that means we need to learn how dog's ;earn and communicate. Luckily there are two principles that can handle most everything.
  • Playing: Playing is fundamental to your dogs health. They are prey animals meaning they need to get out energy and teething can be a painful process. Let them be a goofy puppy at times and have fun!

Surviving the difficult times

Puppies bring with them many one time problems, if you can survive the sharp teeth, the accidents, barking, and the puppy brain forgetfulness. Then you pass the first test!!! I think back to my days just starting Brazilian jiu jitsu, I was eager and dumb... My classes were all about unlearning bad habits and being humbled aka getting choked or body parts bending ways they aren't supposed to.

This gave me tenacity and the lesson of survival. My only goal was to make it to the end of class and continue to show up and give my best. 5 years later my relationship with my health, hobbies, and mind has been a journey of numerous steps taken. Finding time to celebrate my achievements, like choking someone else out, or making it through a day and feeling grateful I get to go again tomorrow.

If you can find joy in the little gifts your puppy leaves you, you will gain a level of confidence that allows you to handle any problem. By the way, when I say find the joy, I am not saying let your puppy do whatever they want over and over again. I mean find the joy in learning how to overcome problems and appreciate the journey, because your puppy only stays a puppy for so long.
